Big Ole, the famous statue of a jolly Viking in Alexandria, MN, is 50 years old, and needs attention, which will cost $26,500. A family of birds was nesting in his shoulder. His cape is made of two pieces that were splitting apart, that needed repairs to hold them together.

We thank the community for generously donating to the Big Ole Repair Fund. With your donations and the generous matching grant from the Alexandria Area Community Foundation, we have met the goal.

Bill, the contractor began work in late August. He bead-blasted about 30% of the painted surface down to the original fiberglass and repaired holes and cracks with fiberglass He strengthened the cape seams. Along the way, he found even more condition issues with Big Ole. For example, old repairs had been made over the paint and were not staying in place. The right arm is made of a thinner fiberglass shell. Bill will need to spend more time to strengthen that.

As the weather cooled down, Bill primed the parts of the statue that you see in the photo as well as the back of the cape. He says the chest and head portions are strong enough to survive the winter, and we can look forward to the remaining repairs in the spring, as well as a colorful new coat of paint.

Ole-Bluelegs-crp50 There was a tenth century Viking King of Denmark called Harald Bluetooth. We have our own Viking, called “Ole Bluelegs,” at least for now!

We have the Runestone!

Welcome to the Runestone Museum, located in downtown Alexandria, Minnesota. We invite you to stop by and tour historic Fort Alexandria, take your picture with the country’s biggest viking, and see the world famous Kensington Runestone.

For a while you will live in the past, so walk a little slower, talk a little slower, and enjoy the exhibit on Norse history, the Native American exhibit, the Minnesota wildlife display, the display of early pioneer life, and the hands-on children’s area.

Enter Fort Alexandria and visit several authentic log buildings, an 1880 country school house, and view the forty-foot viking ship, the “Snorri”. Experience the changing of the seasons in the display of tools and farm equipment used by an earlier generation. For a preview see the Exhibits page.
